  • Lost In Company at Mojo Main, which I'm including because I'm dying to share this portion of their bio, which makes up most of the entire bio.  Wow:
"Front man Johnson's lyrics have the touch of romantic fatalism and are a throwback to the neo-soul of the nineties and early aughts. It is a sound which also combines jazz funk, blues, and rock with the anthemic pop hooks of now, but without the melisma that characterizes contemporary pop. In the American Idol age, Lost in Company is refreshing, and stays clear of monosyllabic riffs and self-indulgent vocal theatrics; relying instead on Johnson's lyrics, sung with a slight rasp and a sometimes indecipherable drawl. Johnson's voice endows a complexity to the lyrics that might not be otherwise apparent if delivered by another, a sort of semi-impassioned laconic coolness, an ache in his voice to suggest that he is really singing about something he hasn't quite gotten over yet (which for the sake of the Philadelphia music scene, we have to hope he doesn't)."
Oh man.

Update on Mojo Main calendar: Last week, as part of a rant about how poorly updated most entertainment websites are in Delaware as opposed to Philly, I noted that Mojo Main had nothing on their calendar beyond this weekend.  And I speculated that something is going on over there in Newark.  Well, they've now updated their calendar with shows, through mid-June.

  • Interesting music class: BOSS Loop Station 101 at Accent Music (Kirkwood), conducted by local musician Angela Sheik, who was recently crowned loop station world champion at a competition in Germany.  Learning the art of using a loop station to perform solo is a good idea for any frontman or frontwoman, because it can mean taking gigs that the rest of your band can't do.  I've seen this happen several times.  It takes a lot of skill, but you can actually approximate a full band sound with some planning, practice, and focus, and a good loop station (depending on the band and the genre, of course).  Saturday, 2-5pm, at the Kirkwood Accent store. Facebook event details.

On club websites that annoy me

Can I just put something out there?  If you've ever wondered why I include an equal, if not larger, amount of Philly events in my listings, part of the reason is because it's just so much easier to get info about Philly shows.  Every club website in Delaware, and every other source I use to get Delaware events, is either badly updated, not updated very far in advance, or so. friggin'. tedious. to use.  I go to Johnny Brenda's website and can get enough info for my blog for 2 months of shows - all within 5 minutes.  And guess what?  I don't have to go to that website for weeks after, if I don't have the time.  I go to a Delaware website for info, and it takes me 10 minutes to click around and get the goods on one weekend's worth of events.  Which means I have to repeat the drill the following week, leaving me less time for actual content like this pointless rant.

Case in point: I'd include more Mojo 13 events, but there's no good, central place to find out who's playing, and what kind of music those bands are playing (most of the bookings are not things I'm interested in promoting, but I also know that occasionally a good band is featured).  I've just given up trying.  Mojo Main, on the other hand, has a decent calendar format that I can use, and bookings not geared entirely to the biker crowd, but it's now May 10th, and their show listings are only updated through next Wednesday.  What is going on with them?  Are they closing, stopping shows for a while, or did the woman who does the calendar quit?

I'm trying to streamline the updating of this blog as much as I can, because I no longer have the copious free time I did when I started this thing, so it helps if I can go to a particular club's website, not have to spend much time there, and not have to visit it again for a while.  It's annoying as hell when I have to go to the same clubs or promo websites (like inWilmington) every few days just to try to keep a good balance of Delaware to PA shows.

Also, I had 5 hours of sleep.  That is all.

Farmers Market time!

There's nothing I love more on a summer afternoon than a farmers market, even though they're usually pretty expensive, limited, and with quality that can be hit or miss.  Rave review, I know - but here's the thing: nothing gives you a warm fuzzy like buying blueberries directly from the family that grew them, or bread from the woman who baked it that morning using an old family recipe, or gourmet sausage from the maker's proud dad, who will tell you all about his son's store's breakfast specials (I'm looking at you, Maiale Sausages).

According to this article on the Dept. of Ag's website, there will be a record 27 markets throughout Delaware, nearly half of them having their inaugural year (such as markets in Trolley Square and Talleyville).  And this doesn't even take into account some great markets in nearby PA, such as Kennett Square.

That also means I have my work cut out for me as I try to include a lot of markets in my weekly calendar.  In the meantime, here's the most recent list, as published by the Dept. of Agriculture (well I was going to copy and paste it here, but the list is 7 pages long):

http://dda.delaware.gov/marketing/2012/2012Farmersmarkets.pdf

Allright, maybe just some Wilmington-centric highlights:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trolley Square Farmers Market (brand new this year)
Location: Delaware Ave. & DuPont Street (next to Logan House)
Days of Operation: Tuesdays
Hours of Operation: 4-7:30 pm
Cool Spring Farmers Market
Location: Cool Spring Park (10th & Jackson Streets)
Days of Operation: Thursdays
Hours of Operation: 4-8 pm
Village Fresh Farmers Market
Location: Concord Ave. & Market Street (across from the Cathedral of St. John)
Days of Operation: Thursdays
Hours of Operation: 3-6pm
(It's interesting that there are two Thursday markets relatively close to one another.  Maybe the clustering will work in their favor).
Wilmington Farmers Market
Location: Rodney Square
Days of Operation: Wednesdays
Hours of Operation: 10-2
Carousel Park Farmers Market
Location: 3700 Limestone Road (Rt. 7), Pike Creek
Days of Operation: Fridays
Hours of Operation: 2-6pm
(I'm surprised the Carousel Park market is continuing, actually - they had half the vendors last summer as the year before.  But it's such a great park, with a good portion of it dedicated to a dog park, that it's worth a visit if you're free on Friday afternoons).
Co-Op Farmers Market
Location: Newark Natural Foods, 280 E. Main Street, Newark
Days of Operation: Sundays
Hours of Operation: 10-2
Kennett Square Farmers Market
Location: the main intersection in Kennett
Days of Operation: Fridays
Hours of Operation: 2-6pm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are also a ton of markets downstate, useful for that week at the beach.  The ones closer to the beach areas tend to be very expensive but very scenic and fun for a walk-through, and the ones further inland tend to have more reasonable prices.  Check out the Dept. of Ag. list I linked above.

Note: I decided to stop putting that apostrophe after the word "Farmers".  I started doing it last year because the News Journal or the Spark wrote it that way, but then I realized that the Department of Agriculture's own website does not put that possession apostrophe at the end.  And maybe it's kind of precious to do so.  So the apostrophe is out.  How nerdy am I that I had to just sit here and explain that.
