For one night only, you can experience the band you should have been listening to for years. Arden Concerts presents LCD SOUNDSYSTEM's documentary "Shut up and Play the Hits" at Theatre N at Nemours on July 18, 2012.

On April 2nd, 2011, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York Magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again." SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is simultaneously a document of a once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of Murphy as he navigates both the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.

The film was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace and is being distributed by Oscilloscope Pictures (the distribution company of late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch). It will be released in theaters across America for a special "one-night only engagement" on July 18th.

Before his unfortunate passing Yauch said of the band: "It can be pretty clear when a band starts, but perhaps less so when it ends, or how it should end. In that sense, it's brilliant of James [Murphy] to end it in such a definitive way."

James Murphy said of the final show, "If it's a funeral . . . let's have the best funeral ever!!!" and encouraged everyone to wear black or white or black and white. In the spirit of the event, we are requesting the same.

The last movie theatre in Wilmington, The Rialto, closed in 1982 and was later demolished. Twenty years later, movies return to Wilmington with the opening of Theatre N at Nemours. Located in The Nemours Building at CityCenter@Wilmington 1007 Orange Street the theater underwent renovations that include new seats, painting, carpeting, movie screen and a concession area. It is located on the first floor of a 14-story building in Downtown Wilmington formerly owned by the DuPont Company. Today, the newly renovated property is owned by the Buccini/Pollin Group.

WTB's recommendations for shopping locally this holiday season

Small Business Day isn't officially until Saturday, but any day is a good time to support local businesses.  You're not only supporting business owners, but also their employees, their local suppliers, and the employees of the local suppliers, possibly your own neighbors.  I don't mean to turn this into an anti-Walmart rant, but when you buy from a local small business you're also helping to stave off the slow but relentless encroachment of national conglomerates and big box stores into our shopping districts.

Rainbow Records
What was once a small empire of stores in Delaware has now boiled down to one very small store, occupying a corner of the larger room it once was.  It's almost hard to believe that this is the same Rainbow as the vast store on Concord Pike that I built my first CD collection from in the early nineties. Needless to say, Rainbow Records could use your business, whether it be for LPs, CDs, or books.  But it seems to me that, even though the owner has had to whittle down his former local chain to one tiny spot, he's still living his dream.  Maybe more so now than before.  Now he's catering to avid record collectors (his people, I imagine), and that's probably what he set out to do in the first place.  The guy's been through a lot - let's help him retain this piece of his dream.
Rainbow will be having Black Friday version of Record Store Day specials, in addition to their usual deals (I think they had everything Black Keys discounted this week, for instance).

Hours are slightly longer on weekends but you can always count on them being open 11-7, 11-5 on Sundays.

The Chef's Haven

But what caught my eye is that they will sharpen knives for you.  This is a great gift for foodies and serious home cooks.  Don't buy an automatic knife sharpener from a big box kitchen store - it will ruin good blades.  Have a professional like the owner of this store, chef Mark, 'tune up' your honey's best knives.

Besides offering interesting clothing and tchotchkes for the more punk-rock minded among us, they're running a great deal on one-off customized t-shirts this week.  Through Saturday the 26th, you can select an American Apparel t-shirt of your choice, provide the shop with a design to be screen-printed, and get a single, customized t-shirt for only $30.  Yes, I wouldn't normally call $30 for a t-shirt a deal, but when you're getting it screen-printed to your specifications and the shop is willing to do a batch of just one t-shirt, that's a really great deal.

Kinetic Skateboarding

I was going to say that this will only interest the skateboarders, but in looking at their website it seems they have way more than just skateboard equipment, and are worth dropping in on, for the rest of us.  (I desperately wanted to learn to skateboard at one time, but didn't have the balance for it.  It is like a hot knife through my cold, dark heart every time I see some little kid get the hang of it immediately).  This shop, which recently celebrated the opening of a 2nd location in Haddonfield, is owned by a young father of two with connections to the local music world.  He's good peeps, and this shop deserves your business.

Accent Music
Accent, a two-store small business, is in a little bit of a struggle right now with the newer and larger Guitar Center that just opened.  The thing to remember about Accent is that they employ not just the men and women selling guitar strings and amps, but literally dozens of music teachers.  You're helping all of them out when you choose Accent over Guitar Center, when possible.  (They are not paying me to post this coupon, though I do have several friends who work there).

Tuesday shorts: Give your input on the revitalization of the west side, benefit for the Arden Concert Gild, 15 year win streak for Iron Hill Brewery

1) New interactive website lets you have input on the revitalization of the west side of Wilmington (which includes the areas around Canby Park and Little Italy).  The site was designed by Interface Studio and commissioned by the West End Neighborhood House, as well as other neighborhood organizations and businesses.  How the website works: view the map of the west side that's provided on the site, click on a spot within the map that needs improvement, and submit comments and suggestions that will correspond with place markers that will then appear on the map.  As an example, someone else wrote "More trash cans" for a spot on Union Street.  I think this is a great idea.  Website here.

1) Have lunch, dinner or drinks at Stoney's Pub to benefit the Arden Concert Gild.
Spend money at Stoney's today (Oct .11), from 11am-1pm, and 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the Concert Gild to help with the enormous costs of replacing the roof of Gild Hall.

2) Congrats to Iron Hill Brewery for a 15 year winning streak at the Great American Beer Festival.  This year they received a bronze medal for their Grand Inquisitor Stout, a bronze medal for their Vienna Red Lager, and a silver medal for their Russian Imperial Stout.   Full story over at Iron Hill's webpage.

Free Energy to play Arden's Gild Hall on May 13th.

At $12 a ticket, this is a bargain considering the venue, which usually charges more, and the band, which I believe has headlined the TLA in the last few months.  And TLA tickets don't go for $12.  I don't know if Delawareans are familiar enough with nationally-known Philly bands to sell this concert out, but it's a possibility, so grab a ticket soon. 

The venue is the Gild Hall in Arden, off of Orleans Rd., accessible from Harvey Rd in North Wilmington.  Proceeds will help the Hall, which has been the center of Arden life nearly a century, build a new roof.  The show starts at 8pm.    Here's the link for more info or to buy tickets:

Aside:  Opening will be Delaware's "New Sweden", a band I'd like to get behind, except I'm having a hard time getting past the way one of their instrumentalists holds her instrument.  I'm sure I'll get over it, I just need a little time.  You could say I know a little something about her instrument, and every time I see a picture of her holding said instrument, it's like nails on a chaulkboard.

Ardensingers' Gilbert & Sullivan performance

The Ardensingers are a local opera group that have been putting on Gilbert & Sullivan performances in Arden, every spring, for the past 63 years (84 if you count the name the company started under in the twenties).  What can I say about Ardensingers, which is something I was involved in as a teenager?  It's not quite like going to see a professional opera company.  But they put a pretty high quality show nonetheless, and it's always an entertaining two hours.  There's a live pit orchestra, elaborate costumes and wigs, nice sets.  A lot of work gets put into these performances.  Definitely go to see their Mikado, which will be next year's operetta.

This year they're doing The Gondoliers, which is the story of two newly-wed Venetian gondoliers whose fortunes change.   Performances are May 5th at 8pm, May 6th at 8pm, and May 7th and 2pm and 8pm.   Tickets are $17 for adults (yes, pricey, but a quarter of the cost of a professional opera performance), $14 for seniors, and $10 for full-time students and children under 18.

Point-to-Point on Sunday

Point-to-Point is well covered by the local media and needs no fanfare here.   It's also not exactly Wilmingtonic's bag.  But for those who like to wear big hats, or who like to sit on a patch of grass and drink (that great Delawarean past-time), the date is May 8th.   Also, if someone gives you a free ticket, you might as well check it out at least once.    Get some ice cream if Woodside Creamery is there.
