Kennett Flash to begin Movie Monday series. October selections are horror classics.

This is exciting news, because let's face it: Movie Mondays at the Trocadero are a little far, and Theatre N doesn't show much in the way of Halloween films like they used to (remember when they had the Devil Music Trio provide live scores to classic black & white films?). 

The schedule is:

October 10th - The Ring
October 17th - Poltergeist
October 24th - Halloween (one of my all-time favorites)

No admission will be charged for these showings, though donations are encouraged.  The door time will be 7pm, with the showings starting at 7:30pm.  Food and drink are available at the Flash.

And now my rant about people who go to these things and ruin it for the rest of us by loudly making fun of the films as they're being shown:

I hope people don't show up to these screenings to just laugh their way through the pivotal moments.  Anytime I've seen a horror classic on screen, there is always at least one drunk d-bag (usually female, by the way) who forces out ironic gales of laughter at what are supposed to be the scariest moments, totally ruining the mood.  I say "forces out" because it never sounds like she thinks it's actually funny, but it's more like she's trying to impress a date by showing how unaffected she is by suspenseful cinematic moments.  Don't do this.  It's annoying to those of us who came out to appreciate the vintage film as it was originally intended.

Upcoming festivals

There are two major festival periods in Delaware.  There are the weeks in May/June when the Greek Festival, Italian Festival, Chinese Festival, and more happen one after another.  September is the other one.  So get your lederhosen/mushroom recipes/polka shoes ready now.

I'll post more detailed info on the appropriate weeks, but here's a heads up if you want to plan in advance.

Saturday: "Mushroom Walk", the 3rd in the "Wild Foraging" walk series at Bucktoe Creek Preserve.

Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Description: 

The final walk is an Edible Mushroom walk being led by Glenn Boyd and Terri Layton of the New Jersey Mycological Society. Hunt for common and elusive fungi on a June afternoon. Learn what to look for prior to the mushroom emerging so you can find them easily in the future and how they can be used for food and medicine. After the walk we will review the mushrooms we found so you can take notes."

The Wild Foods Dinner will follow from 5-7pm.  Contact Bucktoe Creek if you're interested in this, because I can't tell from the blurb if this will be open to those who only show up for the final walk. 

For the bird-watchers: Sunday morning and Monday morning bird walks at Bucktoe Creek Preserve, in Kennett

Doing too much partying on the weekends?  Cleanse your soul with some nature and wildlife walks.  Bucktoe Creek Preserve is in nearby Kennett Square, PA, and offers bird walks on Sunday mornings and Monday mornings, through the fall. 

Sunday bird walks: Every Sunday from now until early October.  8am.  Free, no registration required.  Meet at 432 Sharp Road parking area at Bucktoe Creek Preserve.  The walks average 3 miles and are led by expert birders.  Coffee and tea is provided. 

Monday bird walks:  Every Monday from now until early January.  8am, free, same meeting spot, same details as above. 

From photos Bucktoe Creek has posted, participants range from late twenties and up (in other words, if you're worried about it being you amongst a sea of senior citizens, worry not).   Besides being good for the soul, these bird walks sound like something you could do with an older (but somewhat mobile) relative - maybe an aunt or a dad you haven't been spending enough time with.   Food for thought.

9k/5k "trail run" in Kennett Square on Saturday.

Registration begins at 8am, trail run begins at 9am.  The location is the Stateline Woods Preserve, 814 Merrybell Lane, Kennett Square. 

The event benefits The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County, or TLC for SCC.  There will also be a scavenger hunt for families at 10am.
