I will only be able to update this blog sporadically for the next few months. However - help yourself to these handy links that I use in compiling my lists!

1) I will be moving somewhere temporarily for the next few months (no, not jail!).  There is an unbelievable amount of things I need to get done before that happens in 3 weeks.

2) I will not have my own internet access in that time.  At most I'll be able to check my email a few minutes a day from a coffee shop, on an iPod.  That's not exactly conducive to running a blog.

However, there will be times when I do have better internet access, and I will try to sneak in a post here and there.   So - I'm not exactly retiring this blog yet, but it's going to a "when I have time and internet access" basis for a while.

I may resume regular posting in the fall.  As many times as I've thought putting out this blog was a pain in the ass, I'm going to miss this.  I really care about getting more Wilmingtonians to support some of the endeavors I've recommended.

In the meantime, here are some websites you might want to check out if you're looking for the kinds of events that I've posted about in the past.

Cultural events pages:

  • DelawareScene, a different blog (that tends to be more family-friendly, all-ages than mine.  More classical concert listings, less rock music).  I refer to this to find ideas about lectures, plays, museum events, etc: http://www.delawarescene.com/

  • InWilmington.  This is the official city-sponsored page for events going on in Wilmington.  I only refer to it when I really had the time, because I find the format incredibly tedious to use (as in maximum amount of clicks to find a little bit of info).  http://inwilmingtonde.com/

Concert pages:

  • Calendar for Mojo Main, in Newark (they have their issues, but really they're one of the only places in the county for fledgling and up-and-coming local bands, that aren't cover bands and are a little on the "heavier" side, to play): http://www.mojomain.com/calendar

  • WXPN / Swollen Fox calendar for almost all non-classical concerts going on in and around Philly.  I feel like it's my dirty secret that I get almost all of my Philly listings from here, but for the first year of this blog, I went through every Philly clubs calendar one by one, like I do for the Delaware clubs.  This is so much easier: http://xpn.org/events/concert-calendar

  • Spaceboy Clothing, on lower Market Street.  They host punk shows sometimes.  Not a lot of shows I'd be into, personally, but I admire their DIY efforts.  Wilmington needs more of this kind of thing. Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/spaceboyclothing

  • Kelly's Logan House Facebook page.  It's the only place I've ever found to get info about the handful of original band shows they host, but they tend to really lag in getting info out there.  Still, every once in a while they have a really good show.  http://www.kennettflash.org/tickets.html

  • Mojo 13 in Claymont.  I've made no bones about the fact that Mojo 13 is not my scene.  In the early days, Tric Town brought some good indie rock shows there, but now my perception is that they host mostly hard-core bands.  I could be wrong about this.  But it's hard to get a sense of the bands that play there, beyond their names (which often have the words "Death" or "Corpse" in them).  This is the only website I ever found that lists a music calendar for Mojo 13, and info is scant here: http://www.kennettflash.org/tickets.html . This is their Facebook page, which may have event listings that give more detail about the bands: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kellys-Logan-House/51853472989?sk=info#!/mojo13delaware?fref=ts

Friday, April 12, 2013

This weekend, April 12-14 (quick sketch):

I'm taking the week off.

But a quick glance tells me that:

-The Honey Badgers are headlining Mojo Main on Saturday.  http://www.mojomain.com/calendar

-Documentary Sound City is playing at the Kennett Flash Friday night, 7:30, $5. 'When you think of where some of rock's greatest and most memorable albums were recorded, chances are that LA's Sound City is not what you have in mind. This is the story that Foo Fighter's front-man and first-time director, Dave Grohl, sets out to tell about this unlikely rock landmark that changed the face - and more specifically, the sound - of music. Sound city is the place where the classics were made including, Nirvana's "Nevermind," Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" & "Rumors," Tom Petty's "Damn the Torpedos," and many, many more.' http://www.kennettflash.org/tickets.html

-There are no shows at all at the Grand Opera House this weekend.

- Fat Daddy Has Been and Soraia are playing the Queen Theatre on Friday.  (I love the Queen's new website, by the way - so much less tedious to navigate!  Well done).  http://queentickets.worldcafelive.com/

-Theatre N is showing Hunky Dory and Like Someone in Love all weekend, and on Sunday evening there's a free showing of a documentary called Red Cry, profiling the plight of Lakota women.  http://www.theatren.org/

-Logan House is still showing their February entertainment schedule.  Silly Logan House! (Cue humorous trombone noises).

-Quizzo at the Delaware Art Museum on Friday?? http://www.delawarescene.com/event.php?id=9555

-City Theatre Co.'s "Fearless Improv" is at the Buzzware Village Center in Arden, Friday, followed by open mic comedy.  8pm. http://www.city-theater.org

-Girl Talk and Janelle Monae are playing the Penn Spring Fling, Friday. $35-$55. https://tkt.xosn.com/tickets/

-The Friday shows at the Electric Factory, Union Transfer, TLA, Johnny Brenda's, and possibly Kung Fu Necktie are all sold out. Odd, right?

-Delaware's Cliff Hillis is playing the Steel City Coffee House, which is near Philly, on Friday.

-Wovenhand, which is the same guy behind 16 Horsepower, is at Johnny Brenda's on Saturday.

-The Appleseed Cast is playing the First Unitarian Church on Sunday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the upcoming week, The Proclaimers are playing the Tin Angel on Monday (my sister would be all over that show like you wouldn't believe), Deerhoof, Danielson Famile, and People Get Ready are at Union Transfer on Monday, Sean Hoots is at JB's on Monday, Twin Ghost is at the North Star Monday, jazz songstress Diana Krall is at the Grand Tuesday, reggae mainstay Steel Panther is at the TLA Tuesday, Carolina Chocolate Drops are in Sellersville Wednesday if you didn't get enough of them at the Grand last weekend, B.B. King is at the Keswick Wednesday, Bobby Long is at WCL Philly Wednesday, Ben Sollee is at the Queen Thursday, Willy Porter is at the Tin Angel Thursday, Anthrax is at the TLA Thursday, Acid Mothers Temple is at Johnny Brenda's Thursday, Yarn is at the Abbey Bar Thursday, Marco Benevento is at the Blockley next Friday, UK 2013 is still way too expensive for my poor husband to go see, Toy Soldiers is at JB's next Friday, Suicidal Tendencies is at the Electric Factory next Friday, Andrew Gray and Delawarean Tim Celfo are at the Kennett Flash next Friday, Graham Parker is at the Queen next Saturday, and I'm going to cut this short at this point because I have to go talk to a man about a horse.
This weekend, April 5th-7th:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FRIDAY 4/5:

Concerts:
  • Tric Town 11th anniversary show at Mojo Main.  Low Cut Connie (band from NYC and Philly that's been making waves lately, Jon Spencer vibe - see video below), Villains Like You, The Keefs, and Butterscotch Grim.  18+, music at 9pm, $10.
  • Carolina Chocolate Drops and Bombadil at the Grand Opera House. 8pm, $28, but it's looking to me like it might be sold out. Call 1-800-37-THEGRAND to find out for sure.
  • Bill Mallonee at the Kennett Flash.  "Bringing Americana, alt-country, and rock from Athens, Georgia, Bill Mallonee is most known as leader of the (nineties band) Vigilantes of Love." Music at 8pm, $15-$18.

SATURDAY 4/6:

General Events:
  • Film: Showings at Theatre N: Welcome to the Punch and A Place at the Table. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • History: Civil War one-person reenactment at the Kirkwood Library. "Learn about the life of a Civil War soldier".  2:30pm, free. Kirkwood Library is on Kirkwood Highway, halfway between Prices Corner and Newark.
  • History / Fashion: Symposium on the history of fashion, presented by UD faculty from the fashion, art, and history departments.  Trabant Center, UD campus, 9am-5:30pm, free. Registration is from 9-9:45, different talks go all day. Complete info.
  • Jazz: Jam session at The Nomad Bar at 9th & Orange. Every Saturday, 4-7:30pm, free.
Concerts:
  • At WCL at the Queen: Rod Kim & Vince Cirino, The Splashing Pearls, DJ EA, Jacopa De Nicolo & the Younger Hebbels, and Katie Dill of Mean Lady. 7pm, $10. Ticket link.
  • Spokey Speaky at Logan House, 10pm, $5-$10 range.
  • Classic Albums Live presents The Who's Who's Next, at the Grand Opera House. $28-$37.  Classic Albums Live is not a band in the usual sense, but a company that puts on these note-for-note productions in different cities, sometimes at once, using a rotating arsenal of good hired-hand musicians.  My gut reaction is that this is a gimmicky, Disney-ish version of music performance tailored to people who just want the experience and don't particularly care who's playing what, but I can see why folks enjoy this, at the same time. To each their own.
  • Afternoon 10-band hardcore show at Mojo Main. Noon to 7:30, $10-$12.
~In Philly and beyond~
  • Show at the long-lost Khyber, now going back to its old name of the Khyber Pass Pub.  Walter Shreifels, Illinois, and Goodnight Lights. $12. I had one of those I-feel-old moments last year when I was talking to a younger, mid-twenties Philly musician -- he had never heard of the Khyber, because it stopped hosting music before he was of-age.  Egads.  But the Khyber Pass is back, and this is exciting.
  • Fleetwood Mac at Wells Fargo Center. $50-$150.
  • The Frightened Rabbit show at Union Transfer is sold-out.
  • The Morrissey show at the Tower has been canceled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUNDAY 4/7:
  • Film: Showings at Theatre N: Welcome to the Punch and A Place at the Table. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Classical: Brandywine Baroque at the Barn at Flintwoods, Montchannin/Kennett Pike area. Performing works by Thomas Arne, with special guest counter-tenor.  3pm, $13-$26. http://www.brandywinebaroque.org/
  • Music festival at World Cafe Live Philly: WXPN's Big Day Out. featuring Dar Williams, John Wesley Harding, Lianne La Havas, Ben Arnold, Birdie Busch, Sonny Landreth, & more. $100-$175. http://xpn.org/events/events-calendar/big-day-out
  • The Black Angels at Union Transfer. $17
