There is a way to get into the Firefly Festival without buying a ticket...

Good news for locals who might want to check out the Firefly Festival but aren't willing to pay the high ticket price: Firefly is now looking for volunteers.  Dover is only an hour away from Wilmington, and it's even closer to the beach, if you have a beach property in which to crash.

Details here: http://fireflyfestival.com/#volunteer.php

UPDATE: You actually have to pay $20 just to apply, and you might not be selected, if interest is high.  Geez.  So not only is this festival avoiding an opportunity to pump money into the local economy by *hiring* people to man concession stands, they're making $20 a head on anybody who even hopes to volunteer.  Okay, I get that the musical acts are very expensive and there's no guarantee the promoters will make a profit, but that's a little off-putting.

Firefly Music Festival in Dover

So I haven't talked about this yet, because I think everything that needs to be said about it has been said by people far more informed than I, but obviously, there is a gigantic music festival going on in Dover in July.  I didn't realize how huge it was until my sister, from out of state, told me that people had known this festival was going to take place somewhere on the East coast, well before the Dover location was announced.

It's happening July 20-22 at the Dover race track, and tickets are not for the faint of heart at $218 a pop ($198 if you buy them in advance). Anybody doubting that people will pay these prices to come to a festival in Dover should know that the pre-sale tickets for this sold out within minutes, so I suspect this festival will do okay.

The line-up includes The Killers, Jack White, Death Cab For Cutie, John Legend, The Flaming Lips, Passion Pit, Cake, Lupe Fiasco, Girl Talk, Ok Go, Cold War Kids, The Wallflowers, Chiddy Bang, The Head and the Heart, Bombay Bicycle Club, Cults, Ra Ra Riot, The Felice Brothers, Mariachi El Bronx, and many more.

Have a good time, to those who can make it.  I will be traveling in July.  Full line-up and details here: http://fireflyfestival.com/

Weekday events of note, 4/23-4/26:

Monday 4/23:

  • (Wilmington) City Restaurant Week kicks off, with 14 restaurants offering prix fixe lunch and dinner menus. See full list at: http://inwilmingtonde.com/events/city-restaurant-week
  • Grilled cheese & craft beer tasting at the Queen, with live music from Kyle Swartzwelder.  6pm. (This is the last time it's happening until late May, at least according to the current Queen schedule).
  • Movie Monday at the Trocadero: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.  21+, $3.  Doors at 6:30, show at 8, arrive before 7 and get a free beer and popcorn.

  • Correction: This showing has been moved to Tuesday May 1st.  One-time-only showing of multi-award-winning modern silent film The Artist, at Theatre N.
  • Yann Tiersen at the Queen Theatre (also playing at Union Transfer on Thursday, but I'd support the local venue first, if possible).

  • Thursday noon concert at the church on Rodney Square & 11th St.: this one's for opera fans, with a preview of Opera Delaware's Porgy & Bess
  • A documentary about pit bull breed discrimination at Theatre N. Okay, here I must express an unpopular opinion.  I'm not against pit bulls, rottweilers, and other so-called dangerous breeds, but I often think that the people defending their reputations doth protest too much.  There's an out-and-out denial there of any issue with the dogs except for ones with "bad owners".  I don't dislike pit bulls, german shepherds, rottweilers, and dobermans, but I am slightly more cautious around them than other dogs, no matter how nice an owner they have.  That's just prudent.  There needs to be a middle ground between people saying they're all dangerous, and people saying they're not dangerous at all except for the ones mis-raised.  Neither side is correct.
  • Yann Tiersen at Union Transfer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upcoming: George Clinton at the Queen on 5/2.
Amusing Wilmington business promo of the week
From the Greater Wilmington Visitors and Convention Bureau:
"Looking for a place to host your destination wedding? Take a tour of the majestic two-tiered space that the legendary Queen Theatre offers in Greater Wilmington!"
Having a wedding at the beautifully renovated Queen Theatre sounds great, but... "destination" wedding?  Isn't that a bit of a stretch?  People get married in Wilmington because they're from here, or around here.  What po-dunk place would you have to be from to choose Wilmington (or any mid-sized US city, for that matter) for the site of a destination wedding?  That's not even a dig, but let's be realistic, here.  We're not The Bahamas.
Weekday events of note, 4/16-4/19:
Some really nice shows at The Grand Opera House this week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Monday 4/16:

  • David Sedaris gives a reading at The Grand (I've caught his tour before - definitely worth seeing).
  • Indie singer-songwriter Julia Holter at the Arden Gild Hall. • International FourSquare Day.  For some of you this will mean something, for the rest of us - it's pretty much another internet fad.  I stopped signing up for these things a couple of years ago, when I realized that there truly is a new social networking craze every year.  It never ends, and you just end up repeatedly making passwords, uploading user photos and info, and watching as the thing you just signed up for falls out of favor.  I think when Twitter became popular is when I drew that line.
  • Grilled cheese and craft beer tasting at the Queen, with live music from Erick Baker, 6pm (this will also be held next Monday, but then it won't happen again until late May).
  • Movie Monday at the Trocadero: 2011's Hugo.  21+, $3.  Doors at 6:30, show at 8, arrive before 7 and get a free beer and popcorn.

  • Local H at Mojo Main.
  • One-time-only showing of Milking the Rhino , about wildlife conservation in Kenya, at Theatre N.  The film-maker will be on hand to answer questions, afterwards.  7pm, $5. http://www.theatern.org/Films/2012/April-2012/Milking-the-Rhino

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday 4/19:
  • Market Street Music presents: Terra Soul Project, jazz. 12:30pm at the church on Rodney Square and 11th. $3.  http://inwilmingtonde.com/events/event.php?e=1957
  • Screening of the Vincent Price classic House On Haunted Hill at the Queen, to benefit the Light Up The Queen Foundation.  Why that movie in particular?  It was the last one shown to audiences before the original Queen shut down as a movie theater in 1959.  Showing at 7:45 pm, sharp. Ticket link.
  • Felix Hunger, The Jolly What, The Swirl, and Red Drum at Mojo Main.
I'm tinkering with the format again.  Observe!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FRIDAY 4/13:

General Events:

  • Prediction: The News Journal will run their usual fluff piece on whether locals are superstitious or not.  Their in-house cartoonist will draw a picture of some big-toothed guy anxiously opening an umbrella under a ladder as a black cat runs underfoot.  I will run my usual snarky comment about The News Journal running their usual fluff piece.

DCCA on the riverfront, 5:30-7pm. $10 members, $15 non-members. Signature cocktails included. http://www.dcca.org/
  • This time, it's not 'grilled cheese', but Yoga and craft beer tasting at the Queen.  Because there's nothing Delawareans like so much as pairing anything, anything at all, with alcohol.  Tomorrow: Doing your taxes and craft beer tasting.
