For anyone interested in volunteering with a Delaware-based bike project:

In the past I talked a lot about the Wilmington's Urban Bike Project (I should probably check into what they're doing these days), but now there's also a Newark Bike Project.  They've already got a lot of activities on the books, from a bike sale to basic maintenance classes, but they're in need of more volunteers:
"There will be a meeting in regards to volunteer opportunities and to form committees next Tuesday, February 21th at 7:00pm in Gore Hall, room 116.

There are a number volunteer roles that need to be filled at NBP; among these rolls are Bike Mechanics, Bike Drive Coordinators, Education Squad, Bike Clinic Club, Web Master Faction, Bike Sales Outfit, etc.

If you are interested in leading or cont...ributing to any of these endeavors, or have ideas about other roles to help support NBP, please come! You're encouraged to bring friends and others who may want to get involved with NBP. Our needs range from time donated to fix bikes all the way to administrative tasks like seeking out and writing grants.

Thank you to everyone who has made the first week of our Basic Mechanic's Training class a success! We hope to continue offering programs like this and further community classes on all things related to biking in Newark.

Thank you in advance, this project requires a lot of coordination between us all!"

Delaware Center for Horticulture brings a veggie garden to the "food desert" of Southbridge, Wilmington.

Good on them.  I used to have to travel to Southbridge once a week in a former career, and if there's a neighborhood in Wilmington that needs help, it's that one.  And not only did DCH and the Master Gardeners of NCCo team up to bring a big community garden to Southbridge, they installed a beautiful mural on the adjoining building.  It's worth clicking on the story just to see the mural.  Really well done!

Want to get into next Saturday's inaugural Wilmo Rock Circus for free?

Gable Music Ventures, the organization behind this 10 band showcase at the riverfront on Saturday Nov. 26th, are looking for a few more volunteers to assist with the event.  Volunteers get in for free (though tickets are a friendly $10, anyway).  Here's a link to the basic details for Wilmo Rock Circus (by the way - I'm not a big fan of the "Wilmo" shortening.  I can't put my finger on why, but it just doesn't work for me.  Maybe because it rhymes with "Elmo"):

Ever thought of doing a one-off volunteer job for the local environment?

If so, you can find out about such volunteer opportunities via a website maintained by DNREC's division of Fish and Wildlife.  These are events during which you can lend a hand to upkeep trails, plant trees, pull invasive weeds, set up a festival, etc.

It's a good site to keep in your browsers 'favorites', to reference when you have extra time and a desire to be outdoors, doing something beneficial for the First State:
http://www.dnrec.delaware.gov/fw/Volunteers/Pages/Calendar.aspx

There aren't actually many events listed now that the weather has gotten cold (and boy has it - it's hard to believe I was on Lewes beach earlier this week in summer clothes), so check this website again in the spring.  In the meantime, there's a weeding day, a reforestation project, and a festival (set-up volunteers needed) in late winter.

Many of the volunteer events take place in lower Delaware, but there are some NCCo opportunities to be found, such as the aforementioned day of weeding two invasive species in New Castle (of course, if you're anti-hunting, it might be a problem that this takes place at a hunter education and training center run by DNREC.  But my feeling about hunting is this: while I could not personally shoot an animal, I'm really glad there are people helping to keep the numbers of local deer down.  It has gotten really dangerous at night/early morning on the roads leading into and out of Wilmington.  I am actually way more wary of deer on the roads than of drunk drivers and texters, and that's sad.  So animal rights aside, it's just not feasable for me, personally, to be against a program that teaches safe hunting practices.  /soapbox).

On volunteer opportunities for children:

I don't have children, myself, and I largely steer clear of 'family' events and issues when I post here, but child rearing does enter my brain sometimes, in between curmudgeonly rants about the local music scene and searches for the next great local happy hour.  And if there's one thing I'm pretty sure I would do as a parent, it would be to instill a sense of volunteerism in my child.  Empathy (even for those of us who tend towards the misanthropic) seems to me to be the most important thing you could pass on to a child - more important than the sports teams, the music lessons, etc., and definitely more important than the acquisition of "stuff".  So what do you do?  How do you help kids to learn about helping their fellow man, or standing up for things that have no voice, like pets or the enviroment?

Volunteer Delaware has some ideas.  From their blog - http://networkedblogs.com/q9sh5:

"Almost every day, a parent contacts me about wanting their child to volunteer. No matter the age, I encourage the parent to work with the child to find a volunteer opportunity that speaks to their interests. The feeling this child gets by helping others or supporting those who do through donations of money or time is the best way to feel rich and set them on the path of service for a lifetime.
Below are some ways for children, or even this child within us all, to give back and have fun.
For older children, being a youth mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America or the Boys and Girls Clubs of America may be a great opportunity. Both organizations provide youth mentors to children and is a great way for teens to share their love of a particular subject with a younger child. Contact your local club to find out about youth mentoring or one of the other many volunteering opportunities they may have.  For more information about BBSSA, go to www.bbbsa.org for Boys and Girls, visit http://www.bgca.org/
Locks of Love is one charity that encourages participants to work as a team. It is not unusual to hear of specific girl’s organizations or groups, such as a youth group, school club, or other entity, encouraging all members to grow their hair and donate it when it has grown enough. The donated hair is used to make wigs and hairpieces that are given to children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions. The hair is provided free of charge or for a fee that is set based on a family’s income.
Go to www.locksoflove.org to learn more about this very special charity.
Ger creative! Host your own food drive though a local food bank, collect school supplies for those in need in your school district, have a bake sale to raise funds for a local youth organization…your creativity is the only limit. "

Two opportunities to donate things that might be building up, hoarder-like, around your house:

1) The owner of Hockessin gourmet store / cooking school Chef's Haven is from Schoharie, NY, one of the New England towns that was devastated by Hurricane Irene.  In this case, rising waters caused a dam to break, putting three entire towns under water.    The owner of Chef's Haven will be traveling to his hometown on Friday afternoon, and is accepting donations of  supplies that he will take up to Schoharie.   Clothing was one of the items he was asking for, but I see on the town's social networking page (disorganized, so there's no sense linking it here) that they are no longer taking clothing donations.   But they probably still need toiletries, diapers, baby formula, non-perishable food, etc.  You can leave your donations at Chef's Haven, 1304 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin DE 19707.  The number is 302-234-2040.

2) West End Neighborhood House, which provides community services on the western side of Wilmington, is holding a book drive this week.  You can donate your books, CDs and DVDs (doesn't matter how old or dusty) at West End's main lobby, or call Carolyn Gordon at 658-2800 or Tasha Warren at 658-4171 for pick up.

Food Bank of Delaware is still looking for summer volunteers.

They especially need volunteers for the morning hours, to pack lunches for needy kids.   If you have 2-4 morning hours once a week, even once a month, you can help out. And even if you don't have morning availability, you might find a shift or two that suits your schedule.  (And let's be honest - it's a great resume builder).  Check here for all volunteer opportunities:  http://fbd.volunteerhub.com/Events/Browse.aspx

Bike donations pour in for Urban Bike Project at an annual meeting of the White Clay Bicycle Club.

As mentioned earlier, the Urban Bike Project, which provides bikes and bike maintenance classes to youths in Wilmington, was heart-breakingly vandalized and robbed of all of their inventory a couple of weeks ago.  The good news is that donations have been pouring in since then, especially from the members of the White Clay Bicycle Club, who hauled dozens of bikes of all kinds, many in new condition, to UBP's warehouse on North Market Street last Saturday.

The other silver lining is that many people who were previously totally unaware of UBP's mission are now aware, and sympathetic.  UBP just might come out of this as a bigger presence in Wilmington than they were before the robbery.

From a post on Bike Delaware: http://bikedel.blogspot.com/2011/07/donations-for-ubp-pour-in-at-wcbc.html

Update from the UBP:

"UBP will be BACK on TRACK next week, August 4th! Thanks to the many MANY individuals, organizations, and agencies who have given their time, talents and donations to helping our mission and keeping our doors open to the community! Thank you just doesn't seem to say enough. - UBP"

Know anyone who's a superstar volunteer who deserves to be recognized?

Volunteer Delaware is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Awards.  So if you have a crazy aunt who volunteers 6 days a week, and you're constantly telling her she's running herself into the ground, but she just won't give any of it up, now's your chance to do something nice for the crazy old lady.

The nomination deadline is Monday, August 22.  http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/vc/62505/2011%20Nomination%20Form.pdf

Volunteers needed this summer to help pack kids' lunches with the Food Bank of Delaware.

Volunteers must apply and be screened (presumably to weed out convicted offenders).

From FBA:
"Summer Lead Volunteers Needed
Unpaid volunteers needed to assist with our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).  Volunteers will supervise and coordinate the preparation and packing of several thousand childrens' meals daily during the summer.  Great opportunity for individuals seeking to gain leadership experience while working in a fast-paced environment.  Volunteers needed Monday-Friday from 10 AM -6 PM (program runs from 6/20/11 - 8/20/11).  Volunteers will be selected by application and interview.  Interested candidates should email Anna McDermott at amcdermott@fbd.org."

You wouldn't need to be available every day - it seems that some volunteer for as little as 3 hours, total.  The only big question mark in my mind is where this is held, since the FBA has several locations through-out the state, some convenient to Wilmingtonians, some not.  Probably the meal packing will take place at all FBA locations.
