FRIDAY:

General Events:
  • Art: Art Is Tasty, a monthly discussion of art over lunch, is being held at the Delaware Art Museum, noon-1pm. $14, price includes lunch, in the museum's cafe.
  • Art: It's another First Friday Art on the Town. 5-9pm throughout the city of Wilmington. http://www.wilmingtonde.gov/visitors/artloop
  • Theatre: Bootless Stageworks presents the opening of The Musical of Musicals: The Musical (gotta love that title), at the Black Box at OperaDelaware, on Poplar St in Wilmington. 8pm, $18-$25. The show runs through October 19th. More info.
  • Film: Showings at Theatre N: Drinking Buddies (set in a Chicago brewery and starring Ron Livingston), Blue Caprice (inspired by the Beltway sniper attacks), and First Comes Love (a documentary about a 41 year old NYC resident who decides to have a baby on her own). http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Art / Benefit: There's a meet-and-greet and "informal conversation" with Jamie Wyeth at the Brandywine River Museum. The $50 ticket benefits a program to bring art to needy schools. 7:30-8:30pm. Call Becky Bucci to reserve at 610-388-8112
  • Market: Kennett Square year-round Farmers Market, 2-6pm Fridays on State Street.
Concerts:
  • Aoife ("EE-fuh") O'Donovan, a folk/bluegrass singer who I wouldn't know at all except I saw her just yesterday on a truly amazing Tiny Desk Concert segment with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, is performing at the Grand Opera House. See the bottom of the page for the Tiny Desk Concert video - it's really worth it. $23. More info.
  • Travel Band and locals Splashing Pearls play WCL at the Queen.
  • Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas also play the WCL at the Queen.
  • Tony Travalini and the Still Lifes do a free early show (7pm) at Mojo Main.
  • Lush Farm, a "grunge-ish" indie rock band from Baltimore, headline the late show at Mojo Main, with at least 2 openers. $5. 
  • Ben Arnold and Born Sisters (you'll never guess how the two young women in this band are related) at the Kennett Flash.  $15-$18.
  • In lower Delaware, there's day 1 of the Delmarva Folk Festival. http://delfolk.org/page1/index.html

  • Surfer Blood (they opened for The Pixies when they came to the Grand Opera House a couple of years ago) play the TLA.
  • Kalob Griffin Band play Johnny Brenda's.

  • Theatre: City Theatre Co. performs one night of Jesus Christ Superstar at WCL at the Queen, as their season kick-off event.  Music by Joe Trainor and area musicians. More info.
  • Comedy: "The Ivy League of Comedy", featuring tv regulars Dan Naturman and Ross Bennett, comes to the Delaware Theatre Company. $35-$60. More info.
  • Comedy: "The Amish Comic", who has appeared on Comedy Central, is at the Kennett Flash. $15-$18. http://www.kennettflash.org/tickets.html
Concerts:
  • The Nik Everett Band and McKinley Short play WCL at the Queen.
  • Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainright Roche perform at the Grand Opera House. Lucy is the half-sister of Rufus and Martha Wainright, and Suzzy is her mother and the founder of The Roches. $25. More info.
  • The Chesapeake Brass Band kicks off a mysterious (because there's no good info out there on it) village fair in Brandywine Village. 19th St. & Superfine Lane. Noon-1:30, no idea how long this fair lasts or what else is involved. But if you live in the neighborhood, check it out?
  • Day 2 of the Delmarva Folk Festival in lower Delaware. http://delfolk.org/page1/index.html

  • Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog and Split Red play the Boot & Saddle. $15.
  • Night Panther and Literature play The Deli's 5th Anniversary Bash at PhilaMOCA.
  • It's the River City Festival at Penn Treaty Park, it's free, and it features the very high-quality line-up of: Vacationer, American Babies, Cheers Elephant, and John Francis and the Midnight Choir.
  • Levee Drivers play the Fire. $5.
  • Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers play the Blockley. Opening is the Dirty Pearls, not to be confused with Splashing Pearls, Pearl & the Beard, or the Dirty Three (I could seriously play the 'connect the band name' game all day).
  • The Goblin (who scored the cult-favorite 70s Italian horror movies of Dario Argenti like Tenebre and Suspiria) show at Underground Arts has long been sold out, but they just announced a show at the Trocadero in December.

  • Free international show at Mojo Main: JoyCut, a minor-key electronic band from Bologna, Italy, headline. Doors at 7pm, 3 local electronic musicians open. FREE.
  • Elf Power (I just chuckled to myself because I at first typed 'Elf Plower') plays the Boot & Saddle. $12.
  • Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck play The Sands in Atlantic City. $$$
  • For your flashback show of the week, Fountains of Wayne, Soul Asylum and Evan Dando play the Ardmore Music Hall.

Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thiele and Aoife O'Donovan (the last of whom will be at the Grand on Friday) do a Tiny Desk Concert taping for NPR, and it is the best and most unique one I've ever seen.
