This weekend, 7/13-7/15:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
FRIDAY 7/13:
General Events:
  • Carousel Park Farmers' Market (Rt. 7 in Pike Creek), Fridays 2-6pm. Thru late Sept.
  • Want to see a movie in a Philadelphia cemetary tonight?  Of course you do.  The Awesome Fest is presenting Plan Nine from Outer Space (the making of which was featured in the film Ed Wood), as well as what they're refering to only as an "eerie exhumation film".  It will be shown on the grounds of the Laurel Hill Cemetary, in northwest Philly, just south of Manayunk.  The Facebook invite says it goes from 9-11:30, but elsewhere says that the movie will start after the sun sets, so you might want to get there before 9.  http://www.facebook.com/events/427183320668217/
  • Showings of Elena and The Samaritan at Theatre N. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Your hostess embarks on another round of summer travels. Every good show of the summer happens in the next few weeks, of course.
Concerts:
  • "The 6" songwriter's showcase at Film Bros. Co-Op. 7-10:30pm, $6.
  • Zach DuPont cd release show at the Queen. With Gillian Grassie and Darlingside.
  • The Hold Up at Mojo Main.
  • Hezekiah Jones with Griz and Cheers Elephant (very solid Philly bill) at WCL Philly, downstairs.
SATURDAY 7/14:
General Events:
  • Winterthur Farm Stand, every Saturday from 9-1, on the side of Rt. 52.
  • Saturday bluegrass jams at Woodside Creamery near Hockessin/Pike Creek. 1-5pm each Saturday, weather permitting. Free.
  • Beach: Lewes Farmers' Market, 8-noon. In historic area, thru late Sept.
  • Showings of Elena, The Samaritan, 1945's Children of Paradise, and classic animated film An American Tail at Theatre N. http://www.theatern.org/Films
Concerts:
  • Touring Chicago indie-synth-pop band at the Chris White Gallery in the Shipley Lofts, downtown: Wolf in a Spacesuit with Spooky Cheddar, presented by Gable Music Ventures, 8-11pm, FREE. Read full band bio here.  Not a lot of up-and-coming out-of-town bands come through Delaware, and I'm finding that it's usually well worth it to seek out those shows when they do happen.  What I mean is that 99% of shows here are either super local (nothing wrong with that, but you tend to get the same sounds over and over again), or the bands are big enough to already be selling $25+ seats at the Grand or the Queen.  You usually have to go to Philly or Baltimore to catch bands that are from elsewhere in the country, yet not already extremely well-known, so it's nice when those shows do happen here. I'd go, but, coincidentally, I'll be in Chicago that day.
  • Katie Dill plays a Mean Lady solo show at Logan House.
  • Victoria Spaeth & the Spaeth Cadets at the Queen with Ross Bellenoit (from Philly - has some top-notch musicians in his band) & A Fistful of Sugar. Should be a good show.
  • Also at the Queen: Queen Summer Bash, with a bunch of local bands that appear to be very new on the scene (no official websites yet, for instance).
  • The Pains of Being Pure at Heart play a free show at Morgan's Pier in Philly.
  • Roger Waters at Citizens Bank Park.
  • Hop Along at Johnny Brenda's.
  • El-P with Asher Roth, Killer Mike, and Despot at the Trocadero.
  • Jazz jam session at The Nomad Bar at 9th & Orange. Every Saturday, 4-7:30pm, FREE.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUNDAY 7/15:
General Events:
  • Co-Op Farmers' Market, Sundays 10-2. East Main St, Newark. Thru mid-Nov.
  • Beach: Bethany Farmers' Market, Sundays 8-12, JULY 1- early Sept. Garfield Pkwy.
  • Showings of Elena and The Good Samaritan at Theatre N. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Bellydance and hafla session at Mojo Main.
