This weekend, 9/21-9/23:

Some weeks, I look at this list and think "Man, this is hardly worth even promoting on Facebook". 
This is not one of those weeks.

FRIDAY 9/21:

General Events:
  • Fresh Friday Market at Nemours Plaza, 11th & Tatnall.  9am-5pm.
  • Carousel Park Farmers' Market (Rt. 7 in Pike Creek), Fridays 2-6pm. Thru late Sept.
  • Clay Date at the Delaware Art Museum. Experiment with clay, bring a date. No experience necessary. Supplies, beer, wine, & light snacks provided. 7-9pm. $30-$35.
  • Showings of Last Call at the Oasis and 17 Girls at Theatre N. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Opening night for Gypsy at the Wilmington Drama League.
  • Polish Festival on the riverfront. 5-10pm, free.
  • Oktoberfest in Newark, opening night. 5-11pm, $8.
Concerts:
  • Free at noon concert at World Cafe Live Philly: local favorites Sun Airway.
  • Rupa and the April Fishes at the Arden Gild Hall.  Gypsy jazz (and sometimes roots rock) from San Francisco, with some very PJ Harvey-ish vocals from the singer. 7pm, $14.
  • N2 Wilmington (new monthly series at Film Bros. Co-op) presents r&b soul artist Nadjah Nicole and the Charles Barber Trio, with some spoken word artists opening the show. 7:30-10pm, $5, at Film Bros. on 2nd & Market. More info.
  • Jill Sobule and Sarah Donner at the Kennett Flash.  8pm, $18-$21.
  • Jon Herington Band at the Queen (he has long been a touring/recording guitarist with Steely Dan, although we're talking modern Steely Dan, not during their Aja / Pretzel Logic / Royal Scam heyday.  Herington has recently been touring with Madeleine Peyroux). 8pm, $15-$18.
  • Steve Pepper and Matt Bryan at the Bellefonte Cafe "playing amazing music with deep vocals" (the cafe's words) from 7 to 9.
  • Peter Gabriel (performing SO in its entirety) at the Wells Fargo Center. $40-$150.

SATURDAY 9/22:

General Events:
  • Cat and kitten adopt-a-thon at Concord Pet in the Shoppes of Graylyn. 10am-2pm. More info (Facebook link).
  • Fall equinox labyrinth walk at the Delaware Art Museum. 1pm, free, but donations appreciated.

  • IN Wilmington Week (a 9 day celebration) kicks off with a fundraiser breakfast, a sail on the Kalmar Nyckel ($35, but still cheaper than it usually is to do this), and the Kids Corner Music Festival at the Queen (you know, Kids Corner: that show that always seems to be on WXPN when you, a non-child-having-person, are just trying to listen to some adult non-mainstream music.  No, just kidding Kids Corner, you do a good thing).  See full schedule here.

  • Taste of the Riverfront at the Park at Justison Landing. Live music, food, movies. Basically an open house / party at the condos on the riverfront. 3-10pm, FREE. More info.

  • Environmental Book Club at the Dupont EE Center on the riverfront: discussion of Mark Kurlansky's COD: The Fish That Changed The World (one of this blogger's favorite non-fiction books) and World Without Fish. 6-7:30pm, free, no pre-registration required.   • Doctor Who marathon at Mojo Main. 9pm, FREE.
  • Beach: Lewes Farmers' Market, 8-noon. In historic area, thru late Sept.

  • Showing of Back to the Future at the Taste of the Riverfront party. At dusk, free, at the Park at Justison Landing.

  • Musikarmageddon Finale at the Grand Opera House, featuring finalists Schroeder, Mallory Square, and The Hold-Up.  8-10pm, $8.
  • The Ragbirds (young, fiddle-based roots ensemble) at the Queen Theatre, with local opener Betty and the Bullet. 8pm, $12-$14.
  • New Sweden, Villains Like You, and The Hold Up at the Taste of the Riverfront party at Justison Landing.  Free. More info.
  • Wye Oak, the most noteworthy band out of Baltimore right now, at Union Transfer. Callers open. $13-$15.
  • Metric at the Tower Theatre, $28-$33.
  • Owl Talker Trio at Bellefonte Cafe. I'm not 100% clear on the set time, but probably 7-9. Free.
  • Jazz jam session at The Nomad Bar at 9th & Orange.  Every Saturday, 4-7:30pm, FREE.
  • Little Big League at Kung Fu Necktie.  8pm, $8.
  • Tycho and The Album Leaf at the Trocadero. $17.
  • Steve Forbert at WCL Philly, downstairs. $20-$33.
That's not a young Patricia Arquette and some dude; that's Baltimore duo Wye Oak, with the very mystical-80's-ish marimba-based song "Spiral". 
I was jamming out to this song all summer.

Concerts:
  • Tim Brady at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. 2pm, $10-$20.
"Canadian musician Tim Brady is a composer and electric guitarist who has been radically reshaping new music for electric guitar for over 25 years. Named by Guitar Player Magazine as "one of the 30 most important guitarists for the future of the instrument," Brady has released 19 CDs of music as a composer and guitarist since 1988 and has toured extensively in North America, Europe, and Australia. 24 Frames -- music for electric guitar, live electronics, and video -- brings together Brady's over 25 years of work creating new music for electric guitar in a multi-movement, multi-dimensional performance. Each movement explores its own unique sound world, combined with powerful video projections created specially for the project by video artists Martin Messier and Nelly-ve Rajotte."
  • Sunday cabaret at the Queen Theatre, presented by Gable Music Ventures.  This is part of IN Wilmington Week, and features student performance groups from both the Delaware Music School and Christina Cultural Arts Center. 3pm, $10.  
  • Laetitia Sadler (ex-Stereolab) at Johnny Brenda's. Orca Team ("1960s Post Punk Beach Party from the confusing waters of the Pacific Northwest.") open. $12.
  • Bass great Marcus Miller (who headlined at the Clifford Brown fest in recent years) and LP Stiles at WCL Philly, downstairs. $33

Not really my thing (I'm not a guitar player - it sounds like so much noodling around to me), but I'm advocating this just because how often does an event like this get put on in Wilmington, at an art gallery?  Not often at all.  So here it is, judge for yourself: Tim Brady, 24 Frames.
