Weekday events of note, 4/16-4/19:

Some really nice shows at The Grand Opera House this week.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday 4/16:
  • David Sedaris gives a reading at The Grand (I've caught his tour before - definitely worth seeing).
  • Indie singer-songwriter Julia Holter at the Arden Gild Hall. "With a recent sold out NYC debut at le poisson rouge that was video webcast live on NPR music, we are thrilled to bring a very different kind of Indie sound to Arden for this solo Monday evening concert."  http://www.ardenclub.org/ $12
  • International FourSquare Day.  For some of you this will mean something, for the rest of us - it's pretty much another internet fad.  I stopped signing up for these things a couple of years ago, when I realized that there truly is a new social networking craze every year.  It never ends, and you just end up repeatedly making passwords, uploading user photos and info, and watching as the thing you just signed up for falls out of favor.  I think when Twitter became popular is when I drew that line.
  • Grilled cheese and craft beer tasting at the Queen, with live music from Erick Baker, 6pm (this will also be held next Monday, but then it won't happen again until late May).
  • Movie Monday at the Trocadero: 2011's Hugo.  21+, $3.  Doors at 6:30, show at 8, arrive before 7 and get a free beer and popcorn.
  • !!! at the Blockley.
Tuesday 4/17:
  • Buddy Guy at The Grand.
  • One-time-only showing of Bag It, a documentary about an artist who creates grand sculptures out of used plastic bags, at Theatre N. http://www.theatern.org/Films
  • Kira Small (Nashville session singer for Peter Frampton, Martina McBride, Wynonna Judd, Faith Hill and more) and Bryan Beller (bassist who's toured with Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, and the band that is represented as Metalocalypse on Cartoon Network), at the Nomad Bar at 9th & Orange Sts.  8pm, FREE. http://inwilmingtonde.com/events/event.php?e=2350
  • Seasonal allergies lecture at Newark Natural Foods Co-Op. 6:30pm, in "the meadow".
  • Yoga and craft beer tasting at the Queen, 6pm (again - now a regular feature).
  • Lushlife (thoughtful, evolved rap) record release at Johnny Brenda's.
Wednesday 4/18:
  • A tribute to Bill Monroe (bluegrass fiddler, right?) at The Grand.
  • Local H at Mojo Main.
  • One-time-only showing of Milking the Rhino , about wildlife conservation in Kenya, at Theatre N.  The film-maker will be on hand to answer questions, afterwards.  7pm, $5. http://www.theatern.org/Films/2012/April-2012/Milking-the-Rhino
  • 4W5 Blues Jam at the Queen. 7pm, free.
Thursday 4/19:
  • Market Street Music presents: Terra Soul Project, jazz. 12:30pm at the church on Rodney Square and 11th. $3.  http://inwilmingtonde.com/events/event.php?e=1957
  • Screening of the Vincent Price classic House On Haunted Hill at the Queen, to benefit the Light Up The Queen Foundation.  Why that movie in particular?  It was the last one shown to audiences before the original Queen shut down as a movie theater in 1959.  Showing at 7:45 pm, sharp. Ticket link.
  • Felix Hunger, The Jolly What, The Swirl, and Red Drum at Mojo Main.
  • The man behind the great theme song of Portlandia, Washed Out, at Union Transfer. Now I'm going to have that music in my head the rest of the night.  But that's okay.
  • Karaoke at Mojo Main (front room). 9pm, free
  • The Bad Brains show at the Troc is long sold-out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upcoming: Fountains of Wayne at Union Transfer Fri., Free Energy at the First Unitarian Church Fri., Lucero and Deer Tick at Union Transfer Sun. George Clinton at the Queen 5/2.
